Death

Death, that dark host

He is sleek, handsome, debonaire

He has the best of manners when hiding in plain sight

He takes with no compunction, as that is his role

He is the barker in the carnival

The ticket taker, the ride operator

The sideshow freak announcer

The soothsayer, the fortune teller

The thief of hearts

The harbinger of doom

He is blamed for so much sadness and pain

That of those loved, lost

The lucky ones

He is begged for

He is reviled

Yet it is by his touch that we are released of the bondage of the body

Back to that, of whence we came
